Glory Days! - Vintage Kyushojitsu
This is simply the way I see things
First off let me start out by saying I Love Kyushojitsu!
I love the entire field of pressure point, energetic, mind body Jedi martial arts.
I grew up on a steady diet of Grand Master George Dillman and his Illustrious and [Often Notorious Inner Circle,].
I cut my teeth and honed my timing, speed, weapons and trapping skills completely immersed in the teachings of Professor Remy Presas
And of course The Flow and Sensitivity Training of Grand Master Wally Jay's Small Circle Jujitsu took me to Jedi Levels. In fact just call me Darth Snyder 😉 Sorry, Could Never Relate To The Little Green Dude Although He Could Kick Some Serious Ass.
I can probably never fully repay the gifts these great teachers have shared with me. But I'm sure gonna try. Suffice it to say, I've pretty much drunk the kyusho kool aid. Yup, I'm a believer,
In fact, you could say I've pretty much dedicated the bulk of my martial arts career to becoming the very best kyusho-man on the Planet...Sounds Pretty Arrogant, or to say the very least ... Ambitious.
I am also a diehard researcher and pragmatist. I'm a combat realist. And like all good students of Combatives - I'm all about winning as quickly, efficiently and as safely as possible.
As much as I love these arts, which are really "arts within arts" as Prof. Presas Used To Say- And As Usual...He Was Dead Right.
I am also often the first to be very critical of certain approaches and attitudes toward kyusho training.
I am NOT A Traditionalist.
In fact, my rather iconoclastic nature often rubs the more "traditional folk" the wrong way. And Sometimes my passion for investigation and innovation puts people (especially folks with a lot of year invested in doing things a certain way) on the defensive. (sigh)
It used to bother me.
Now a days, not so much.
You see, I'm never really satisfied.
I'm always looking for the holes, gaps and deficiencies in our training programs and constantly searching for and refining ways to train that make what we do easier, faster, more effective and SAFER To Apply.
Now When I Say Safer to Apply I Don't Mean Doing Less Damage To The Other Guy.
You see I'm okay with dealing out damage if it’s necessary and sometimes I think we get a little too soft in our efforts to "stay safe" Not that I am advocating training stupidly or with little or no regard for safety.
I'm extremely safety conscious in all of our classes.
Even So, We Do Sometimes Have To Remember Combat is NOT Ballet Class.
And in our Quest For Safety, We often run the risk of deluding ourselves about the efficacy and/or practicality of certain "techniques," ESPECIALLY Where Pressure Points Are Concerned.
But I digress...
What I am really talking about though when I say apply our art safely is-Successfully Applying or Adapting Our response to an attack while simultaneously
And of course, If all that weren't enough...
Whenever possible I also want to Completely
...My Attackers Perception and Understanding of What Is Happening so that I can continue to do the work I need to do in order to end the conflict rapidly.
After All, Isn't that Exactly What Kyushojitsu Is About?
Pressure Points Aside... Kyusho is Really All About Resolving Combat Quickly and Decisively Right? You see for me personally, and I'm betting to a certain degree it’s the same for you as well.
I Only Want the BEST Stuff I can Get My Hands On
In fact, I'm fanatical (bordering on OCD) about it.
So I am constantly searching and researching, analyzing, synthesizing and testing. Always on the lookout the holes in our training, ways to exploit them, ways to fix them and finding innovative ways to expand the range of our fighting skills in minimum time.
To put it bluntly.
I'm looking for MASSIVE ROI (Return On Investment). I don't want a pound of reward in return for a pound of effort... Heck No. I want 100 pounds of return for 1 pound of effort.
Am I being too greedy, expecting too much?
I don't think so.
That quest has led me into some pretty interesting and unusual studies.
The culmination of one of those studies is the topic of today's post....

What the Heck IS Bio-Mechanical Kyushojitsu?
In a nut shell, Bio Mechanical Kyushojitsu is the art and science of attacking the bio-mechanical, kinesic and proprioceptive weaknesses of the body.
Traditionally and historically pressure point combat techniques were categorized into and focused on three primary areas of study.
For the most part, the dominant emphasis in the past two or three decades has been on nerve attacks.
Specifically places in the body where nerves
with an emphasis on Angle, Direction and Type of neurological stimulus necessary to trigger the desired effect.
Blood Kyusho - Sounds Way Cool.
But Finding an Expert on Blood Kyusho is only slightly easier than catching a sighting of Bigfoot or the Loch Ness monster. GM Dillman told me he only knew of one guy and he's kind of "hard" to find.
And As For Muscle Attacks...
Well, unless someone can point me in the direction of a competent practitioner, I'll have to assume they went the way of the dodo bird.
I'm hoping to be wrong. Time Will Tell.
Why Study Bio-mechanical Kyushojitsu, Aren't nerve attacks enough?
The Answer, probably not.
As good as neurological kyusho is - And I really should make a distinction here.
When I am referring to Neurological Kyusho In This Article.
I'm specifically referring to Attacking Nerve Points.
In our systems here in San Diego, we've done a much deeper study of neurological kyushojitsu and significantly expanded our understanding of how to easily and effectively manipulate the human nervous system. It's really fascinating stuff. and it makes combat sooooo much easier.
Why would we want to add bio-mechanical kyushojitsu to our repertoire of combat skills.
It works on anyone with a skeleton - Sounds Funny I know, but one of the drawbacks of nerve point attacks is that NOT Everyone Is Easily susceptible to nerve point attacks.
Everyone's skeleton and joints work the same way, are subject to the same responses to natural forces being applied with a much narrower range of diversity with regard to sensitivity and resistance.
Even people with rubber joints or hyper-flexibility tend to have harder time when dealing with attacks to their structure. Remember most jujitsu, tuite and other joint locking systems attack ranges of motion and the flexibility the body in a very narrow way, usually by trying to work against the natural range of motion of a joint.
If the guy has rubber nerves, You are going to have trouble activating kyusho points.
Attacking the body at a structural and bio-mechanical level causes the nervous system to go into "hyper-sensitivity mode that means the moment our bodies begin to perceive our stability is at risk, the more bandwidth your defensive systems divert to your proprioceptive and kinesthetic faculties making your nerves much more responsive to any neurological pressure point attacks you deliver.
Bio-mechanical kyushojitsu also throws our nervous system into a kind of confusion which also makes you more responsive to neurological input.
Bio-mechanical kyushojitsu also tricks the body into believing one thing is happening while it’s actually doing something else
When properly applied, using bio-mechanical kyushojitsu removes the “platform" that your opponent needs to mount a defense or launch a counter attack.
That means you are far more likely to avoid being hurt, or countered, even if your kyusho point attack does not work, or you miss, thus giving you another chance to finish the encounter.
One Last Thing... You'll be hitting your opponents a whole lot harder as well.
The body relies on its structure as a way to dissipate force being applied to it. When you use bio-mechanical kyusho the normal structure of the body becomes distorted so any strike you give will penetrate deeper into the body.
One Pound of Force Now Gives You 100 pounds of result!
How is it different from tuite-jitsu or even small circle jujitsu:
First and foremost. Bio-mechanical kyushojitsu is NOT about grappling or more specifically "locking"
Yes, it can be used for grappling very well. but its primary purpose is to
All points that make it ideal for multiple assailant encounters
They can work Synergistically - Bio-mechanical kyushojitsu can and does work very well with pretty much any grappling art, amplifying the overall effectiveness of anything you combine it with.
For ease of learning we've divided the study into modules. Each one can stand on its own or be used in conjunction with other modules as skill level dictates.
The distinctions are strictly mine, some of these you may recognize, others may be completely new to you. While others you may "think" you know what I am talking about but may actually be referring to something else. 😉

times something "others" tell us we can't do.
Welcome to the world of the warrior.
Warriors are not just people who fight, although
in this context there is obviously a fighting
Warriors are People Who STRIVE!
When we talk about spirit, when we talk about
We are talking about two things really
Okay well maybe three...
To see something we want, and to strive for it
no matter how hard, or long, or complicated
the path may be.
When we embrace those attributes.
We are Warriors.

NOT aspiring to be all I could be,
Inspite of the tremendous gifts the universe
has bestowed on me.
